Golf as it was meant to be is at the heart of Sand Valley. The resort is home to Sand Valley (Coore & Crenshaw, No. 15 on Golfweek’s 2023 Top 100 Resort Courses list) and Mammoth Dunes (David McLay Kidd, No. 16 on Golfweek’s 2023 Top 100 Resort Courses list), along with the 17-hole short course, the Sandbox and, opening in 2024, Tom Doak’s heathland-inspired Sedge Valley. Adjacent to the resort is The Lido, a private club, open to those staying at the resort Sunday to Thursday. Among the most captivating stories in the game, The Lido is a detailed recreation of C.B. Macdonald’s lost Long Island gem.
From Design Notebook, February 11, 2025
Sand Valley is a Dream Golf resort.
Aside from its exceptional fescue turf, Sand Valley’s greatest strength is its variety. The original Sand Valley course is the down-the-middle, medium-tough, beautifully executed Coore & Crenshaw design. The Sandbox is the after-hours hangout—bring a few wedges, several beers, and no scorecard. Sedge Valley is the sporting course, with scaled-down features and a par of 68, but still plenty of width. The Lido is the experiment: a private course with some public access, a high-tech resuscitation of a great (and very difficult) work of early-Golden Age architecture.
And Mammoth Dunes? It’s where you wallop driver and try to make a bunch of birdies. Nothing wrong with that, especially as a complement to Sand Valley’s other, more precision-oriented courses.
