- The folks running Copetown Woods Golf Club will tell you the Dirk Kirkpatrick-designed course wasn’t opened in the early 2000s to make ranking lists like our Top 59. Instead, it was built to make use of land that couldn’t grow broccoli, which was course owner Gord Forth’s primary cash cow. The land wasn’t suited for farming because its soil was sand based, which is perfect for golf. Kirkpatrick, a longtime shaper of other architect’s plans, was hired to lay out the course and he knocked his first solo-design out of the park. Copetown Woods doesn’t beat you over the head with its wonderfully flowing holes, but it requires smart, strategic play to score well and a fine touch around its shapely greens. The turf is always firm and fast and the vibe at the club is welcoming and relaxed. (The food is terrific, too.) Best of all is Copetown’s approach to pricing. Its peak weekend walking fee doesn’t crack $80, an unheard-of rate for such a quality course an hour’s drive from Toronto. “We don’t make our pricing decisions based on short-term demand,” said Barry Forth, Gord’s son and the general manager of Copetown Woods. “As a family owned and operated business with three generations now involved, we are here for the long haul.” It’s a refreshing approach.

- Chiseled out of the rolling Lanark Highlands and carved by the Clyde River, Timber Run Golf Club, located between Carleton Place and Perth near Ottawa, might look benign and charming in a “cottage” course kind of way. Don’t be fooled by the scorecard (66.6 rating/119 slope). For sure, the front nine with nary a par 5 and three par 3s presents lots of opportunities for scoring, and you better take advantage. The back nine, on the other hand, has some of the toughest holes you’ll find in the Ottawa Valley. The par-4 13th is a blind tee shot with the first 200 yards playing uphill. The par-4 15th is a dogleg right that requires a huge tee ball to just get a look at the green around the corner. The 16th is an uphill par 3 with the potential for some diabolical pin positions. The club lives up to its name with its clubhouse a massive log structure that’s popular spot for weddings. You will walk through an impressive covered bridge over the river on your way from the second tee to the second green, where you’ll want to take a moment to appreciate the water racing beneath. Pretty cool. The club has dynamic pricing and there isn’t much better value in Eastern Ontario than $36 for 18 holes if you tee off between 1 and 3 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

- I think you would have a lot of fun at Foxbridge.
- The one thing I noticed: Foxbridge is not a classic old course. It is a modern public course with rolling terrain, sandy soil, tighter fairways, mature trees, and recent renovations.

The problem: the course is difficult because of more than distance
Even from shorter tees, Muskoka Bay is not a gentle hickory course.
The hazards are:
- elevation changes
- uneven lies
- forced carries
- large, undulating greens
- granite and native areas
- demanding approaches
The scorecard is full of holes where the modern player expects to hit driver, but the hickory player is forced to think. For example, even the full course includes long par 3s and demanding par 4s; the character of the course remains "championship resort course" rather than "strategic old-style course."
Muskoka is one of Canada’s more popular summer vacation spots. Lots of Torontonians own cottages and vacation homes there, owing to its striking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and numerous lakes with picturesque rocky shorelines. This is Canadian Shield country, where glaciers left ridges and rocks—some the size of small hills—just about everywhere, and the forests seem to increase in size on an hourly basis. People come to hike, swim, fish, visit the area’s craft breweries and art galleries—and to play golf. At just about every course, the granite rocks will come into play often and provide a scenic backdrop to your round. The must-play courses in the area start with Muskoka Bay, a Doug Carrick design where you’ll play betwixt and between rock ridges and treelines over wildly elevated terrain all day and be challenged at every turn. Then there’s Bigwin Island on Lake of Bays, where you’ll need to be a club cabin guest to play, but after the short boat ride to the island, you’ll enjoy world-class golf on a course where the lakeside finishing hole is the culmination of an unforgettable round in nature. At Deerhurst Highlands, the spectacular Highlands Course serves up yet more dramatic rock outcroppings and flat lies are again few. Other Muskoka worthy stops include Rocky Crest, whose name says it all; Taboo, where water and granite are everywhere; and, if you can finagle an invite, the private Thomas McBroom design at The Lake Joseph Club.
