2010 New York City

Saturday, December 11

Started my New York visit with lunch at the Carnegie Deli. It was a great decision to go there early, as when I left there was a long line outside.

Then I went to the The Museum of Modern Art at 11 West 53 Street and made a beeline to see Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890).
Then I saw Abstract Expressionist New York, which didn't have enough Jackson Pollacks. It will be coming to the AGO in 2011.

Went to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum at 1071 5th Avenue (at 89th Street).
Loved it!
Saw these two exhibitions:
Chaos and Classicism: Art in France, Italy, and Germany, 1918-1936
Kandinsky at the Bauhaus, 1922-1933
plus the permanent collection. Claude Monet was brilliant, so much better than Henri Rousseau.

Enjoyed the beer at The Ginger Man, 11 East 36th Street.

Finished the night at the Strand Book Store at the corner of 12th Street and Broadway.
Only bought a book on Wagner's Operas. Could have bought many, many more.

Sunday, December 12
Started the day at the Frick Collection with Alicia.
A great museum!
My favourite was The Sermon on the Mount by Claude Lorrain (1600 - 1682). I went back to see it several times.

Went to the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at 15 East 84th Street at Fifth Avenue for their "Before Pythagoras: The Culture of Old Babylonian Mathematics" exhibition.
It was just one gallery and only needed 15-20 minutes. Cool but hardly worth the trip. Previous exhibition was much better.

Visited the The Morgan Library & Museum at 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street. Roy Lichtenstein: The Black-and-White Drawings, 1961-1968  and Mark Twain: A Skeptic's Progress were features.

Went to the William Bennett Gallery. It is below Soho at 65 Greene Street, between Broome and Spring Streets.
There were lots of cool stuff but it is small so you only need maybe 20 minutes.
My favourite was a nice Picasso for only $4,500.
